Healthy skin. Why is it important according to this Skin Expert?

I would like to share my views with you on the topic of bad skin, from different perspectives. As a fellow woman and as a skincare expert.

In today’s society, where social media and beauty standards are rampant, it’s easy to feel inadequate and insecure about our appearance, especially when it comes to our skin. I know that you can feel hopeless sometimes when it comes to skin issues. They come, they go and just when you have that birthday party they come back again. I’ve been there and even now as a skin professional I also have bad days sometimes. Too much stress, climate change and the occasional hormonal imbalance and I’m there with you. I want you to understand that it’s a normal process for us. There is nothing wrong with having a bad skin day, just like you have a bad hair day.

It is very important that you stop being insecure about your skin condition and stop stressing about it or even being depressed. First of all, these emotions will release the stress hormone cortisol which, in turn, will increase oil production in your skin glands, which then can lead to acne breakouts. You don’t want to be trapped in this vicious cycle. But most importantly, you need to love all your imperfections. That is what makes you human and an original.

That being said, having a good skin is important not just for aesthetic reasons, but for our overall health and well-being. Accepting who you are, loving yourself right now, does not mean not doing everything in your power to become your best version.

First and foremost, it’s essential to understand that our skin is an organ, and it’s the largest one we have. It serves many vital functions, such as protecting us from the external environment, regulating our body temperature and providing sensory information. Therefore, taking care of our skin is just as important as taking care of our internal organs. Just like we would seek treatment if we had an issue with our heart, lungs, or kidneys, we should also seek treatment if we have an issue with our skin.

What we definitely should not do is being convinced, that because it’s an external organ, that we can apply random products to see which one works. You wouldn’t do it with your internal organs, I sincerely hope. I never seen people visit the drug store and buy random medicine for their kidneys failure. And still millions of people every day go to the cosmetic stores and buy random products for their skin condition. This trial and error approach is inefficient, most of the time ineffective and quite frankly in many cases dangerous and damaging to the skin. Not to say how much money you spend on trying different stuff.

As a head of consulting at ELESTÉ Skincare I have helped hundreds of clients all over the world and identified 4 main things that most people are doing wrong during their skin care routine:

  1. Applying the wrong products (for their skin type and condition)
  2. Combining the wrong products
  3. Exfoliating to often
  4. Applying too much or too little product

The first two points require professional knowledge. The cosmetic industry is growing in a crazy pace and the cosmetic products have proven to be highly effective and powerful, with an 80% success rate in curing various skin conditions. But it’s a double edged sword. If you choose the wrong product it will just as effectively damage your skin. So be warned!

The moral of this story is that having a skin condition should not affect the quality of your life or your self-love and respect. Remember that even skin experts have bad skin sometimes. That should probably boost your confidence right away. And know that your conditions is not permanent, you just need good guidance.
